The death of two close family members several years apart prompted Camp County resident and Army veteran B.C. Honzell to inquire about unclaimed headstones of area veterans. He just couldn’t understand why they had never been placed on the graves.

After talking with local funeral home staff and the monument company, Honzell decided something had to be done. He then enlisted the help of two fellow Camp County veterans, Mike Cannon (Army) and Billy D. McNeil (Marine Corps) and together the three are now on a mission to honor their fellow veterans.

“I discovered that the military headstones were being ordered but were not being placed on the graves once they arrived,” Honzell said. “Some have been just sitting for years. We just felt like we had to do something.”

So, the men loaded up the headstones and their shovels and have now started the task of going from cemetery to cemetery throughout the area.
